  16. <p>A celebrated sect leader is convicted of conspiracy in Florida
  17. </p>
  18. <p>    Miami civic leaders hailed Yahweh ben Yahweh for his message
  19. of black self-sufficiency and clean living. The mayor declared a
  20. day honoring Yahweh for his efforts to get drug dealers out of
  21. blighted neighborhoods. But a Fort Lauderdale jury was
  22. unpersuaded by the notion of sect leader as Boy Scout. After
  23. five days of deliberation, Yahweh and six of his followers were
  24. found guilty of conspiracy in the murders of "white devils" and
  25. fire bombing an entire block of Delray Beach.

  27. <p>    As head of the Temple of Love, Yahweh, born Hulon Mitchell
  28. Jr. in Enid, Okla., boasted of building a $100 million real
  29. estate empire, and lectured thousands of Miami-area residents
  30. on "How to Move from Poverty to Riches." Yahweh ben Yahweh,
  31. whose name in Hebrew means "God the Son of God," says he is the
  32. son of God and that whites are "the devil," seeking to enslave
  33. blacks economically and spiritually. Appearing in white robes
  34. and a turban throughout his five-month trial, the leader quoted
  35. the Bible often and denied the charges that he had ordered the
  36. murder of black defectors from his cause and the slicing of ears
  37. from randomly selected white people for trophies.
  38. </p>
  39. <p>    Yahweh wasn't the only controversial figure in the
  40. courtroom; his lawyer, Alcee Hastings, was a federal judge who
  41. was impeached after questions were raised about his involvement
  42. in a bribery conspiracy, although he was acquitted of related
  43. criminal charges. Hastings, who heralded Yahweh as a persecuted
  44. "Ghandiesque" figure, is now running for Congress.
